Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government has introduced stricter rules for social media and messaging platforms, including a licensing requirement for services with over 8 million users. The recently enforced Online Safety Act 2025 aims to protect users—especially minors—while ensuring platforms comply with national regulations. Authorities are also developing additional guidelines such as codes of conduct and enforcement procedures. A key upcoming measure involves implementing identity-based age verification using Malaysia’s national ID system, rather than relying on self-declared age checks. Alongside these steps, the government is exploring a dedicated legal framework for artificial intelligence, while continuing to use existing laws to address AI misuse such as harmful synthetic content. The initiative reflects Malaysia’s broader goal of balancing digital innovation with stronger regulation, user protection, and accountability in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
