Tajikistan is using artificial intelligence to improve water management and respond to growing climate challenges affecting its glaciers and rivers. Known as the “water tower” of Central Asia, the country supplies freshwater to millions of people, but rising temperatures are accelerating glacier melt and increasing risks of floods and droughts. AI technologies are now helping scientists and planners better predict glacier changes, river flows, and seasonal water availability. These tools also improve early warning systems for natural disasters and support smarter planning for irrigation and hydropower. By combining satellite monitoring with digital data platforms, Tajikistan can make faster and more accurate decisions about its water resources. However, experts also highlight the need to manage AI responsibly, since digital systems consume energy and water. With support from international partners, Tajikistan is focusing on sustainable innovation to protect its environment and strengthen long-term climate resilience for future generations.
