How India’s Tier-2 Tech Push Aims to Build a Quantum Hub in Dharwad

The Indian Institute of Information Technology Dharwad (Indian Institute of Information Technology Dharwad) is setting up a Centre of Excellence focused on artificial intelligence and quantum computing, supported by the government of Karnataka. The initiative is part of a broader effort to decentralize advanced technology development beyond major hubs like Bengaluru and extend it to tier-2 cities. The upcoming facility is expected to become operational within a few months, depending on equipment procurement and infrastructure readiness. Once active, it will provide access to quantum computing resources, specialized training programs, and stronger links between academia and industry. Officials behind the project say the goal is to build a talent pipeline in emerging technologies and encourage research in both AI and quantum systems. By combining education, infrastructure, and industry collaboration, the centre aims to position Dharwad as a growing node in India’s deep-tech ecosystem and support the country’s long-term ambitions in next-generation computing technologies.
