Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence has revealed technical details of Russia’s new Klin loitering munition, a high-speed drone reportedly capable of reaching up to 300 km/h and equipped with AI-assisted machine vision for autonomous target detection. According to the analysis, the system relies on a mix of globally sourced components, including a U.S.-made NVIDIA Jetson module for onboard processing, Australian flight controllers, and Chinese navigation and communication hardware, reflecting the fragmented international supply chain behind modern drone warfare. Designed with a delta-wing structure and capable of carrying a small explosive payload, the Klin represents a broader trend in which AI-enabled guidance systems are increasingly integrated into battlefield drones to improve target acquisition and maneuverability. Ukraine’s findings also suggest Russia is developing multiple variants, including naval and ground-based versions using radar or lidar-based targeting systems. While presented as a domestically developed “AI drone,” the Klin underscores how contemporary military technologies are often assembled from widely available commercial components, making advanced autonomous capabilities more accessible to state and non-state actors alike.
