While nearly half of Australians now regularly use generative AI tools for work, study, and daily tasks, trust in the technology remains low, with only around 36% of people expressing confidence in its reliability. The findings suggest a growing divide between adoption and trust, positioning Australia as a “sceptical adopter” compared with other high-use nations. Despite this hesitation, the country has a strong technical foundation, ranking third globally in AI PhD density after the United States and China, with many researchers working in universities and public institutions. Experts warn that limited investment in commercial AI development could lead to talent leaving for higher-paying roles overseas, particularly in Silicon Valley. At the same time, concerns about job displacement, cybersecurity risks, and misinformation continue to shape public opinion. Analysts say Australia faces a key challenge: balancing rapid AI adoption with stronger investment, governance, and public trust to ensure long-term benefits.
