Panama is strengthening its position in the regional artificial intelligence landscape after signing a cooperation agreement with Chile aimed at advancing AI development, innovation, and technological capacity. The agreement, established between Panama’s National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation (Senacyt) and Chile’s Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, focuses on building local AI capabilities and promoting applied solutions across key sectors such as education, healthcare, and public administration. As part of this initiative, Panama has also joined LatamGPT, a collaborative large language model developed for Latin America and the Caribbean. The platform is designed to use regional data and linguistic context, supporting more relevant and locally adapted AI applications while encouraging joint development of AI systems across countries. The initiative reflects a broader shift from simply adopting foreign technologies to actively co-creating AI infrastructure within the region. It also includes cooperation in high-performance computing, AI model training, and applied research. Officials say the strategy is intended to enhance technological sovereignty, attract investment, and support Panama’s digital transformation and long-term economic competitiveness.
