The U.S. Department of Defense has entered agreements with eight major technology companies to integrate artificial intelligence systems into its classified networks, marking a significant expansion of AI use in military operations. The companies involved include OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, Oracle, SpaceX, and Reflection, all of which will provide AI tools intended to support decision-making and operational efficiency across defense systems. The Pentagon described the initiative as part of its effort to become an “AI-first fighting force,” aimed at improving battlefield awareness and strategic coordination. Notably, Anthropic was excluded from the deals after disagreements over safety conditions related to military use of its AI systems. The company had previously faced restrictions over concerns about autonomous weapons and surveillance applications. While some of its competitors secured large-scale government contracts, Anthropic has challenged its exclusion legally. The move highlights growing competition among AI firms for defense contracts as governments rapidly adopt advanced AI technologies.
