Kazakhstan is launching a major initiative to train cybersecurity and artificial intelligence specialists for its energy sector as part of a broader digital transformation strategy. The Ministry of Energy announced that 2026 will be designated the Year of Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence in electricity and heat power systems. As part of this effort, Kazakhstan will develop new professional standards focused on integrating AI into energy infrastructure. These include emerging roles such as “white hat” hackers—ethical cybersecurity experts who test systems for vulnerabilities—and AI engineers specializing in smart energy systems. Additional planned professions include smart grid designers, AI implementation engineers for power systems, and cybersecurity specialists for energy networks. The goal is to modernize workforce skills in line with the demands of a digitally driven energy economy. The country also plans to introduce digital twins of energy infrastructure, enabling real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making across the national grid. AI technologies are already being tested for tasks such as detecting power line defects using drones and monitoring heating networks with robotic diagnostic systems.
