The AI Hub for Sustainable Development, endorsed by G7 leaders and aligned with the African Union’s AI strategy, has been launched to deepen global cooperation and support Africa’s emerging artificial intelligence ecosystem. Based in Rome, the initiative brings together 14 African partner countries, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, and others, to develop AI capacity across sectors such as energy, agriculture, health, education, water, and infrastructure. The hub focuses on building foundational pillars of AI development, including access to green computing power, data systems, talent development, and innovation ecosystems for startups. It aims to address structural gaps in compute infrastructure and enable African innovators to scale solutions globally. Key programmes include the Africa Green Compute Coalition, compute acceleration initiatives, and infrastructure-building partnerships that connect governments, financiers, and technology developers. Officials say the hub is designed to reshape global AI partnerships and ensure that Africa plays a central role in shaping and benefiting from the next wave of technological transformation.
