Google Expands AI Search Tools to 13 African Languages

Google has expanded its AI Overviews and AI Mode features to support 13 African languages, alongside English, enabling more users across the continent to access AI-powered search in their native languages. The update allows users to receive AI-generated summaries of search queries, along with links for deeper exploration, while AI Mode enables more interactive conversations using text, voice, and image inputs. The company says the goal is to make information access more inclusive and culturally relevant, particularly for users whose first language is not English. The expansion is supported by Google’s Waxal language initiative, which combines machine learning and linguistic research to improve AI understanding of African languages. Countries benefiting from the rollout include Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, and others. Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to ensure African users can learn, search, and build using AI tools in their own languages, supporting more inclusive participation in the digital economy.
