East African nations have adopted a new Artificial Intelligence declaration that integrates proposals to build an open, African-led research ecosystem aimed at supporting innovation and equitable development. The agreement, endorsed at the 4th East African Community Science, Technology and Innovation Conference in Kigali, emphasizes open science, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in AI development. The initiative aligns with continental strategies such as Agenda 2063 and STISA 2034, with a long-term vision of creating a globally influential research system by 2034. Officials stressed that strengthening AI in Africa depends not only on investment but also on improving research infrastructure, data sharing, and coordination across institutions. The declaration highlights the need for harmonized policies, sustainable funding, and interoperable digital systems to turn research into practical solutions. Leaders also called for stronger engagement between governments, academia, and the private sector to ensure that AI development directly addresses African priorities and development challenges.
