The East African Community (EAC) has launched a regional Artificial Intelligence technologies fund aimed at turning member states from digital consumers into active producers of AI-driven solutions. Announced at the 4th EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Conference in Kigali, the initiative seeks to finance homegrown research and commercialize “bankable” AI projects across the bloc. The fund will support innovation in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, fintech, and cross-border trade while promoting regional data ownership and technological sovereignty. Officials emphasized that much of Africa’s digital value has historically been captured outside the continent, making ownership of data and AI systems a strategic priority. Alongside financing, the program stresses human capital development through training, research collaboration, and centres of excellence. Leaders across the region described AI as a critical tool for economic transformation, but warned that success will depend on effective implementation, coordinated governance, and sustained investment in skills and infrastructure.
