Hong Kong to launch AI Research Institute in H2 2026, targeting healthcare and finance

Hong Kong has announced plans to establish the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in the second half of 2026, marking a significant step in its push to become a global innovation and technology hub. The announcement was made by Chief Executive John Lee during an international academic forum. The new institute will focus on accelerating artificial intelligence adoption across key sectors, including healthcare, legal services, and finance. It will support applied research, generative AI development, and the commercialization of advanced technologies. The initiative is also aligned with broader national efforts to promote the “AI+” strategy, which integrates AI with traditional industries to drive economic transformation. As part of the plan, Hong Kong will expand collaboration within the Greater Bay Area, strengthening clinical trial platforms and research infrastructure to support faster medical innovation. Education and talent development in STEM fields are also expected to play a central role in building a strong AI ecosystem. Officials say the initiative aims to attract global talent, deepen research capacity, and reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a bridge between international markets and mainland China’s growing AI industry.
