The World Internet Conference (WIC) has launched a new strategy to address the growing artificial intelligence gap between developed and developing economies, with a special focus on small island states in the Asia-Pacific region. The initiative will be highlighted at the 2026 WIC Asia-Pacific Summit, scheduled for 13–14 April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. According to WIC Secretary-General Ren Xianliang, the summit aims to move beyond discussion and focus on practical support for countries facing shortages in infrastructure, funding, and AI talent. The agenda prioritizes inclusive digital development through policy coordination, education, and real-world applications. New sub-forums such as “AI for Better Life” and “Digital and Intelligent Health” will explore how AI can improve public services and healthcare in emerging economies. The summit will also feature training programs under the WIC Digital Academy, offering hands-on experience in AI and cybersecurity for government officials and professionals from developing nations. A key feature of this year’s initiative is its emphasis on capacity-building rather than simply exporting technology, aiming to help countries develop their own sustainable AI ecosystems and reduce the global digital divide.
