Across North America, artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented growth in data-center construction as companies race to build the computing capacity required for machine-learning workloads. Cloud providers and technology firms are expanding facilities capable of supporting massive AI training clusters powered by advanced GPUs. Analysts say the surge in data-center investment reflects the enormous computing requirements of generative AI systems and other advanced machine-learning models. However, the expansion is also raising concerns about electricity demand and environmental impact. Data centers already consume large quantities of energy, and the rapid growth of AI workloads could place additional strain on power grids. Governments and utilities are now exploring ways to ensure that new computing infrastructure is powered by low-carbon energy sources while still supporting the rapid expansion of AI technology.
