Bahrain is pursuing a pragmatic and balanced approach to artificial intelligence partnerships, positioning itself between major global technology powers such as the United States and China. According to recent research, the kingdom is using digital sovereignty as a strategic tool to maximise autonomy while benefiting from both ecosystems. Chinese investment has played a key role in strengthening Bahrain’s digital infrastructure, including hyperscale data centres and 5G networks that support cloud computing and financial technology growth. At the same time, Bahrain maintains strong regulatory frameworks aligned with international privacy standards, including strict data protection laws and emerging AI ethics policies. The country has also avoided fully aligning with either US-led or China-led global AI governance initiatives, instead focusing on flexible cooperation that serves national development goals. Partnerships in education, cybersecurity, and defence further reflect its diversified strategy. However, analysts suggest Bahrain may gradually adopt more Western-aligned compliance standards in the future while continuing to use existing Chinese infrastructure, ensuring interoperability and long-term digital resilience.
