A simple artificial intelligence system is being deployed across Australian service stations in an effort to curb rising fuel theft, which has increased significantly during the ongoing fuel price crisis. The technology, known as Scancam and developed by SenSen Networks, uses cameras and an app-based system to scan vehicle license plates and identify drivers linked to previous unpaid fuel incidents. When a flagged vehicle arrives at a petrol station, operators can require prepayment before fuel is dispensed, helping prevent drive-offs. The system also allows service stations to log incidents, generate reports, and share evidence with authorities while using AI to handle customer support calls related to disputes. While supporters say the tool has already recovered millions in stolen fuel debt and improved repayment rates, concerns remain about privacy, false identification, and affordability for smaller operators. Despite these challenges, adoption is growing as retailers seek more effective ways to reduce losses and deter repeat offenders in a difficult economic environment.
