Utah Approves Nolla Health AI for Autonomous Acne Prescriptions

Utah has approved an artificial intelligence healthcare system that can independently issue prescriptions for acne, marking a significant step in the use of automated medical treatment. Nolla Health, a New York-based healthcare startup, received regulatory approval for its Nolla Derm application, which can assess patients and select treatments from a limited list of physician-approved topical medications. Patients complete an online intake process before receiving a personalized treatment plan and prescription that can be collected from a pharmacy or delivered to their homes. The application also uses daily skin scans to monitor progress and updates treatment plans monthly. Cases outside the system’s permitted limits are referred to a licensed physician. The Utah program will gradually reduce physician oversight across three stages. A doctor will initially approve prescriptions for the first 100 patients. For the following 500 patients, the artificial intelligence system will prescribe independently while a physician reviews prescriptions daily. After that stage, doctors will review a weekly sample. Nolla Health chief medical adviser Zaid Fadul said acne is being used as a starting point rather than the final application. If the pilot performs successfully, the company could expand the model to other common conditions that can be assessed remotely and treated with medications considered to have established safety profiles.
