North Korea Demonstrates AI-Based Missile With Adaptive Flight Technology

North Korea has conducted a test of an intermediate-range strategic missile equipped with artificial intelligence technology, according to the country’s state news agency KCNA. The launch took place off the country’s east coast during a firing drill and focused on a missile designed to change its flight trajectory while traveling at low altitude. Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said Kim personally supervised the exercise. She stated that South Korea and Japan tracked the missile at different distances, reporting flight ranges of more than 700 kilometers and 680 kilometers, respectively. According to Kim, the missile uses a special flight mode that can create a wave-like trajectory and alter its course during flight. She said the newly introduced technology allows operators to select at least four different flight orbit modes based on the intended purpose and target. Kim Jong Un reportedly said that the capability could provide North Korea with technology that other countries may not have access to for several years. The latest test came 13 days after two short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the Wonsan region on September 20. The US military’s Pacific Command confirmed that it was aware of the launch and was consulting with allies and partners. It assessed that the event did not pose an immediate threat to US personnel, territory, or allied countries in the region.
