UK Security Service Raises Research Funding Concerns Over Chinese Institute

Britain’s domestic security service has warned universities to review research collaborations with the China General Technology Research Institute, saying the institute has strong links to China’s Ministry of State Security. The security service said the institute has funded academic research intended to strengthen technical capabilities used for intelligence activities. More than 100 academics linked to the United Kingdom have contributed to projects funded through the institute, according to the warning. The research areas included artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, covert communications and methods for concealing information. The security service said some researchers may not have known the ultimate source of funding behind the projects. Universities have been advised to review current and planned collaborations and establish the final source of research funding when working with Chinese institutions. The warning also highlighted possible legal consequences under the National Security Act 2023 for continued involvement in research ultimately funded through the institute.
