Trump Warns Joint AI Rules With Xi Could Weaken US Tech Edge

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that working with Chinese President Xi Jinping on artificial intelligence governance could make it harder for US technology companies to maintain their lead in the global AI race. Speaking at an event in Washington, Trump said the United States was currently leading in artificial intelligence and that he wanted to preserve that position. He said he had discussed AI with Xi during the Chinese president’s recent visit to the United States, while noting that the two countries already cooperate across several areas. The comments came as Trump prepared to meet technology executives at the White House to discuss artificial intelligence, innovation and oversight. Expected participants include Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Palantir CEO Alex Karp and OpenAI President Greg Brockman. The meeting follows growing concerns about the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from September 17 to 20 found that 73% of respondents were concerned that AI companies had not done enough to prevent serious harm from the technology. House Speaker Mike Johnson has also called for a balance between continued AI innovation and government oversight, arguing that excessive regulation could affect US competitiveness. Trump has similarly emphasized innovation and described stronger concerns about AI threats as exaggerated. The discussions highlight differing approaches to AI governance, with the US administration emphasizing technological competition while the wider debate continues over safety, oversight and the pace of AI development.
