South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on BRICS countries to establish a co-operative, safe and inclusive framework for the development and use of artificial intelligence. Speaking at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Ramaphosa said human governance must keep pace with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence and its growing impact on societies and economies. Ramaphosa proposed the creation of an international mechanism within BRICS for the independent scientific evaluation of artificial intelligence systems. He said increasingly powerful AI models are rapidly reshaping economic and social activities while creating opportunities for higher productivity and human progress. The South African president said the proposed mechanism should be supported by meaningful human-control principles and mandatory reporting of serious incidents involving artificial intelligence. He also called for safeguards to become stronger as AI capabilities continue to advance. Ramaphosa further urged investment in sovereign AI capabilities for developing economies, highlighting the importance of ensuring that countries can participate in AI development rather than remaining dependent on external technologies. The proposal seeks to balance technological progress with safety, accountability and inclusive development across BRICS nations.
