Anthropic researchers Maxim Massenkoff and Peter McCrory have introduced a new measure to assess how artificial intelligence could affect employment, combining theoretical AI capabilities with real world usage data. Their study finds that artificial intelligence remains well below its theoretical ability to perform workplace tasks. The research shows that occupations with greater observed exposure to artificial intelligence are projected to experience slightly weaker employment growth through 2034. Computer programmers, customer service representatives and data entry workers are among the most exposed occupations. However, the study found no systematic increase in unemployment among highly exposed workers since late 2022. The researchers did identify tentative evidence that hiring of younger workers into highly exposed occupations has slowed. Among workers aged 22 to 25, entry into highly exposed jobs declined by about 14% compared with 2022 levels.
