Nepalese authorities have asked Meta and TikTok to quickly remove graphic images, artificial intelligence generated videos, misleading posts and fraudulent donation QR codes circulating after devastating flash floods. Government officials held discussions with representatives of both platforms in Nepal, urging faster action against content that could mislead the public, disrupt relief operations or increase distress among victims’ families. Bijay Kumar Roy, coordinator of the government’s social media regulation and management task force, said authorities want objectionable and deceptive material removed as soon as it is reported. Officials also called on Meta and TikTok to strengthen their systems so graphic and false content can be detected and blocked more proactively. Authorities said old photographs and videos were being reshared as footage from the latest disaster, while artificial intelligence generated material was being presented as genuine. The government also raised concerns over fraudulent QR codes seeking donations from people attempting to support flood victims.
