University of California San Diego researchers will lead a new Department of Energy Genesis Mission project aimed at using artificial intelligence to accelerate research in fundamental physics and quantum computing. Assistant Professor Aobo Li is the principal investigator, with Associate Professor Yi-Zhuang You serving as co-principal investigator. Their team will develop SIDERIUS, an artificial intelligence scientist designed to analyze scientific data, create artificial intelligence models and deploy them on specialized chips. EdenCode, an artificial intelligence company founded by Yi-Zhuang You and UC San Diego alumna Wanda Hou, is also participating in the project. Li said the initiative aims to convert complex scientific challenges into tasks that artificial intelligence can solve effectively. Several other UC San Diego researchers will also contribute to Genesis Mission projects led by other institutions. These projects include developing high-speed artificial intelligence tools for particle physics, optical simulations and rare-event detection. The Genesis Mission selected 278 projects from more than 5,000 submissions, with less than 6% of applicants receiving awards.
