More than 200 economists and artificial intelligence researchers have signed an open letter urging governments and technology leaders to prepare for the sweeping economic changes expected from AI over the next decade. Organised by Stanford University’s Digital Economy Lab, the initiative includes the support of 16 Nobel laureates. The experts warn that AI could trigger a transformation larger than the Industrial Revolution but at a much faster pace. While the technology has the potential to significantly improve productivity and living standards, it could also lead to large-scale job displacement and widen economic inequalities. The letter calls for the creation of policies, institutions, and safeguards that ensure AI complements human workers rather than replaces them. Researchers argue that delaying action until the effects become fully visible could leave governments and industries unprepared for one of the most significant economic shifts in modern history.
