Mauritania has strengthened its digital infrastructure with the landing of a new subsea cable branch in Nouadhibou through the EllaLink submarine cable system, marking a major step in improving the country’s international connectivity. The project provides Mauritania with a second secure and diverse link to European and global digital hubs, significantly enhancing bandwidth capacity and reducing reliance on single routes. Extending over 670 kilometres from the main transatlantic cable, the new branch is equipped with advanced optical technology capable of scaling from multi-gigabit to multi-terabit capacity, ensuring long-term support for growing data demands. Co-funded by the Mauritanian government and the European Union, the infrastructure aims to improve access to cloud computing, AI services, and digital platforms while strengthening national digital security. Officials say the development will support key sectors such as e-government, education, healthcare, agriculture, transport, and energy, while also positioning Nouadhibou as an emerging digital and economic hub in the Atlantic region.
