AI-Powered Biodiversity Monitoring Tested in Gabon Mining Rehabilitation Sites

A new environmental innovation trial in Gabon is demonstrating how artificial intelligence can support biodiversity protection and ecosystem recovery in post-mining landscapes. The project, developed by start-ups Mozaic Earth and Gentian under Eramet’s Open Innovation Challenge, combines satellite imagery, drone data, and ground-level observations to assess ecosystem health with high precision. The system integrates multiple data sources into a digital platform that functions like a “Google Earth for biodiversity,” allowing scientists to visualize species distribution, track habitat changes, and monitor ecological recovery over time. Artificial intelligence models analyze environmental indicators to evaluate the condition of rehabilitated mining sites and detect the return of native species as well as the spread of invasive ones.
