Argentina is emerging as a potential artificial intelligence hub in Latin America through a proposed large-scale infrastructure initiative known as the Stargate project. The effort is being led by Sur Energy in collaboration with OpenAI, following discussions with Argentine government officials and a signed Letter of Intent to explore the development of advanced AI data center infrastructure in the country. The project aims to leverage Argentina’s renewable energy potential to build sustainable, high-capacity computing infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation AI systems. Sur Energy would coordinate the energy and infrastructure development while forming a broader consortium with cloud infrastructure partners. OpenAI has expressed interest in acting as a potential offtaker for the facility. Argentina already shows strong AI adoption trends, with rapidly growing usage of AI tools and an active developer ecosystem building on advanced technologies. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to integrate AI into public services, improve efficiency, and expand digital capabilities across government and industry.
