Russia is increasing investment in artificial intelligence as part of a national strategy aimed at technological self-reliance. President Vladimir Putin has called for the creation of a national AI task force tasked with accelerating the development of domestic machine-learning technologies and large language models. Russian technology companies such as Sberbank and Yandex have already launched their own AI models, including Gigachat and YandexGPT. Officials argue that relying on foreign AI platforms could pose national security risks and expose sensitive data to outside influence. Moscow’s strategy also includes expanding domestic data-center infrastructure and increasing AI adoption across government services and private industry.
