Rwanda is testing artificial intelligence systems designed to support healthcare workers in primary clinics across the country. A new initiative funded by the Gates Foundation and OpenAI will introduce AI-powered clinical support tools in more than fifty healthcare facilities. The technology is designed to assist doctors and nurses by analyzing medical information and suggesting potential diagnoses or treatment pathways. Rwanda faces a severe shortage of medical professionals, making AI decision-support systems particularly valuable in rural areas. Developers say the goal is not to replace clinicians but to help them process information more efficiently and improve decision-making in busy clinics. The project is expected to expand to hundreds of healthcare facilities across Africa if early trials prove successful.
