A major continental initiative backed by the African Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme aims to mobilize up to $10 billion in investment to accelerate artificial-intelligence development across Africa. The program was announced during the Nairobi AI Forum and seeks to support data infrastructure, computing capacity, AI startup ecosystems and specialized training programs. The initiative reflects growing recognition that Africa must develop its own digital infrastructure rather than relying solely on imported technology platforms. Supporters of the program say large-scale investment in computing infrastructure and data systems will be essential if African countries hope to become producers of AI technologies rather than just consumers. The plan also includes support for research networks and innovation programs that could help create millions of new jobs across the continent by 2035. The initiative represents one of the most ambitious AI investment proposals yet announced for Africa’s technology sector.
