Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy has launched the Kenya AI for Disability Project in partnership with Huawei and several local and international ecosystem partners to promote inclusive digital transformation. Unveiled at the 15th Connected Africa Summit 2026 in Nairobi, the initiative brings together stakeholders including the State Department for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, the Kenya Institute of Special Education, Qhala, the Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust, and inABLE. The project aims to develop and deploy AI-powered solutions that improve accessibility, skills development, and participation in the digital economy for persons with disabilities. Supported under Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative, the programme reflects a broader push across Africa to ensure that technological progress includes marginalised communities, while also encouraging innovation through initiatives such as the AI for Disability Hackathon, where student-developed solutions are being advanced toward real-world application.
