PNG government pushes digital transformation and AI agenda on Safer Internet Day

Papua New Guinea is accelerating its push toward digital transformation and artificial intelligence as key drivers of long-term economic growth and government reform. Speaking during Safer Internet Day 2026, Acting ICT Minister Peter Tsiamalili Jr. reaffirmed the government’s commitment to integrating AI into public services, governance, and national development strategies. Central initiatives such as the Reset@50 agenda and the Digital Government Plan 2023–2027 aim to modernise service delivery, improve transparency, and enable data-driven decision-making across all levels of government. At the same time, authorities are working to balance innovation with risk management, particularly as social media usage rises and AI introduces challenges such as misinformation, privacy risks, and cybersecurity threats. The introduction of the Social Media Policy 2025 reflects efforts to strengthen digital governance while maintaining cultural values. Officials emphasise shared responsibility among citizens, businesses, and government to ensure safe and responsible technology use, with AI expected to play a transformative role in shaping PNG’s economic future.
